Overview
English, a West Germanic language within the Indo-European language family, shares its roots with German, Dutch, and Frisian. Originating in Britain, the term “English” is derived from Anglisc, the language of the Angles—one of the Germanic tribes that invaded England in the fifth century.
As the primary language in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and various Pacific and Caribbean island nations, English also serves as a second language in Singapore, India, the Philippines, and numerous African countries like South Africa, Liberia, and Nigeria. With over 2 billion speakers, encompassing a third of the world’s population, English is spoken in more than 100 countries.
Evolved from Old English in 450 CE, today’s English is distinct from its early versions, including Old English (450 CE), Middle English (1150-1450 CE), and Early Modern English (1500-1700 CE). The Modern English period, starting in the late 1700s, witnessed global dissemination through the British Empire, making English the primary language in the USA, New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa.
English’s international prominence grew during and after World War II, solidifying its status as a global language for cultural, economic, and diplomatic influence.
Widely used in business, commerce, science, medicine, aviation, computers, diplomacy, tourism, and more, English is essential for international communication. It is governed by grammar rules, and adhering to these rules, known as Standard English, ensures effective communication, avoiding misunderstandings.
English grammar involves nine-word classes: verbs, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, determiners, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections. It includes aspects like spelling, tenses, punctuation, and word formation. The English alphabet consists of 26 characters, with five vowels and 21 consonants. With around 170,000 words, English incorporates loanwords from various languages, such as French and German.
